Programmer : Gordon Deppe

Programmer Gordon DeppeGordon Deppe emerged on the Canadian music scene in 1980 as the “new wave” was building momentum. It was a time when innovators like the Police, Devo and Talking Heads were breaking virgin ground. Not only was Gord influenced by this new wave, but he and his band the Spoons were among those who helped shape it. Formed in 1979 in Burlington, Ontario, the Spoons soon became a household name with hits that included Nova Heart and Romantic Traffic. They toured continuously throughout the eighties, leading to multiple gold albums, music awards and videos. In fact, the very first episode of MuchMusic began with hosts J. D. Roberts and Christopher Ward introducing brand new videos by the Spoons, Human League and Culture Club. Pretty good company.

Various members of the band went on to pursue solo projects in the early 90s, but by 1995 the Spoons were back on tour following the release of their hugely successful Collectible Spoons compilation CD. “As it turned out,” Gordon recalls, “something that would soon be known as ‘retro 80s’ was just around the corner”.

Today, the Spoons are performing more than they have in years. “Every time I think the retro movement is about to fade, it gets a little bit stronger. I believe that’s it’s no longer just a nostalgia thing. Simply put, eighties music and eighties-influenced music has become another genre of music that’s here to stay.” Gordon keeps busy with his new band Five Star Fall, but jumps at any opportunity to perform with his first love, the Spoons. “People tell me what a big influence our music was on their lives…it doesn’t get much better than that.”

“I think that when you listen to the 80s channel on Galaxie, you’ll rediscover what you always knew was great music.”
